Important terms of 1st Sem question paper:-
Guest Amenities:-
All the luxury items that a hotel gives away to guests at no extra cost.
Horticulture:-
The art or practice of garden cultivation and management.
Dutch wife:-
Another term for the sewing kit provided as a guest amenity.
Shoe mitt:-
It generally absorbs and clean the dust and further,gives a natural polish to the shoes.
Tarnish:-
Tarnish is the substance which forms on the surface of some metals and which stains them or causes them to lose their brightness.
Scrim:-
It has high absorbency and lint free nature, is often used instead of chamois leather for cleaning windows and mirrors.
Surfactant:-
Surface-active compounds that impart a good wetting power, emulsifying power, and suspending power to detergents.
Silver Pit:-
These are small pits that form on the surface of the article. Silver, especially cutlery, gets 'pitted' when left in contact with salt for too long.
Parlour:-
A room set aside for the entertainment of guests; formal sitting room.
Valet:-
A valet is a male servant who looks after his employer by doing things such as caring for his clothes and cooking for him.
Jhony Mop:-
Toilet brush used for cleaning of WC.
Piggy Vacuum:-
Another term for “Back Pack vacuum cleaner”.It is used for cleaning curtains,upholstery edges, mattresses,computer and music system.
Chamois Leather:-
Soft leather that is made from the skin of goats, sheep, or chamois. : a piece of chamois used especially for cleaning windows and cars.
Vanity Unit:-
A unit comprising a wash basin and mirror, surrounded by a flat area where soap, dental kits, shaving kits, and tooth glasses are kept.
Murphy Bed:-
This refers to a bed that folds up into the walls and looks like a bookshelf or cupboard when folded away, being named for a leading manufacturer of such beds. It may also be called a Sico bed ( after another leading manufacturer of foldaway or wall beds ).
Disinfectant:-
A chemical liquid that destroys bacteria.
Box Sweeper:-
A device used to clean rugs and floors, consisting of a metal or plastic box equipped with rotating brushes and pushed by means of a long handle.
Linen Chute:-
A shaft running between the upper and lower floors of a building and used to move soiled linen/laundry to the lower level.
Dust Sheet:-
A large sheet for covering furniture or flooring to protect it from dust or while decorating.
Houseman:-
Another term for houseboy.
Buffing:-
Buffing involves spraying the floor with a polishing solution and buffing the floor with a rotary floor machine.
Squeegee:-
A squeegee consists of a long metallic handle and a wooden or rubber blade to remove excess water from a surface being cleaned It is effective when followed by mopping with a damp mop.
Swabs:-
These are all purpose clothes made of soft absorbent materials.They are used for wet cleaning and damp dusting of all the surface above floor level.
Drugget:-
These are made of coarse, fine canvas or clear plastic and they may be of the size of carpet square and are placed on the floor on the doorway to prevent excessive dirt being brought in or out during bad weather or during redecorating projects.
Abrasive:-
The cleaning action of abrasives depend on the presence of fine particles which when rubbed over a soiled hard surface, dislodges the soil, removes tarnishing and surface scratches from meat surfaces.
Detergent:-
Detergents are those cleaning agents, which contain significant quantities of a group of chemicals known as ‘Surfactants’ (chemicals which have water and soil attracting properties).
Dry mops:-
A long-handled mop for dusting floors.
